Butties Bios
The Butties are an all-Beatles cover band who first played together at Syracuse University in 1983. Since college, Sam, Paul, Mark and Robbo live in different cities across the USA, but they stay in touch — and, to the delight of their fans, they get back together...to rock!
The Butties usually play one or two shows a year, sometimes more. Each and every gig takes on the feeling of a special event. The band rehearses for a few days, knocks off the rust, resurfaces the tires, gets a tummy tuck and a nose job, and then it's time for the big show: a party, really, and the band is having as much fun as the crowd. These guys love to get people dancing to the great music of the Beatles.
The Butties' marathon shows are legendary. The lads have been known to play nearly 80 different songs in one night (what?!?!) - more than many other bands have in their entire repertoire (take that, "many other bands"!); at the end of the night, if the crowd is still game, the Butties 'get back' to the beginning of the set list and start again. Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Let's get to know each of the fellas a little bit better, shall we?
When he's not rockin' bass and singing with the Butties, the famous, yet down-to-earth Sam Lloyd is an actor on stage and screen, best known for playing Ted, the hapless, sweaty lawyer on the hit television sitcom Scrubs. And when Sam isn't playing in the Butties or acting, he sings in The Blanks. Wikipedia.com has an entry for Sam, and he encourages you to add to his legend. Fact: although he's naturally right-handed, Sam taught himself how to play the bass left-handed, because that's how McCartney does it. Respect.
Sam co-founded the Butties with Paul Perry. Paul (vocals, guitar, keyboard) is the "go-to" guy for the rest of the band when it comes to figuring out harmonies; Paul has an uncanny ability to unravel the complex vocal arrangements created by the Beatles. Paul also sings in and arranges vocals for The Blanks, and has appeared on Scrubs as a member of Ted's band. And check this out: Paul is an Emmy® Award nominated songwriter for his brilliantly funny song "Guy Love". Well done, sir.
Rob "Robbo" Morey is the engine of the Butties, on drums and vocals, driving the beat and energy of the band ever since their first show in Syracuse in 1983. Most drummers hunker down behind their kit all night long, but Robbo plays piano and guitar too. It's a high point in every Butties show when Robbo steps up to the front of the stage to show those skills. Robbo is the music director at Holy Family Church in Syracuse, and they're lucky to have him. Amen to that.
The Butties had three guys, but they needed one more. Mark Humble didn't know how to play lead guitar, but he was willing to learn, and the rest is history (some guitar solos were history along the way, too, but that's another story). Mark writes music for children's books from Sesame Street and Disney, composes soundtracks for A&E International, plays guitar in another Beatles cover band called Bubble, plays bass in an Irish folk rock band called the County Kings, and has his own CD available on CDbaby.com. Yeah, baby!
